New Ugandan law means death for homosexuals

The African nation of Uganda recently passed a law that punishes homosexual acts with life in prison, and in some cases, death. This anti-gay legislation is supported by the Ugandan parliament as well as president Yoweri Museveni.

As if the simple fact that this legislation exists isn’t enough to make eyes grow wide with horror, it may further disturb one to know that the laws have links to American fundamentalist preachers, such as Richard Cohen, who claims to have ‘counseled thousands of gays to turns straight,’ and Paul Cameron, a pastor who has published large amounts of anti-gay legislature. A Ugandan minister who helped write the bill has close ties to the famed influential evangelical preacher Rick Warren, who so far, has refused to condemn the bill. The bill also bans public discussion of homosexuality, barring AIDS groups from entering the country.

These actions of the Ugandan government are despicable and those of the Americans who support them are downright sick. This legislation is bred from hate and will do nothing but spawn it amongst the Ugandan people. Gays deserve the right to life, a life like any other human being. To jail or even possibly kill them is a crime against human rights that echoes the horrors of The Holocaust.

However, many nations have taken the initiative to stand up against this bill. The law is drawing fire from the United States, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom. Also, international AIDS groups and human rights groups such as Amnesty International have openly condemned the hateful legislation. The government of Sweden has cut $50,000,000 worth of funding for Uganda.

One might argue that “It says in the Bible that homosexuality is wrong.” However, it is important to remember that not all people hold this belief. Also, aren’t mercy and kindness also  Christian tenets?

All students, nay, all citizens who hold a conscience, should by alarmed and disgusted by this act of hate. I say we should flood Rick Warren’s mailbox with our letters of anger and let him know that we will not stand for this archaic legislation.  Let us stand up against this deplorable legislation and openly condemn worldwide discrimination of gays.
