Although the economy continues to struggle the video game industry continues to perform well recording a record $5.53 billions dollars in the U.S. alone in December.

The main factor that contributed to strong sales in December was the large number of video game consoles sold.  The Nintendo Wii continued its strong sales selling 3.81 million units.  Nintendo’s handheld the DS also had a strong month selling 3.31 million units.  The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 both had a good December as well selling 1.3 and 1.31 millions units respectively.

Sales on the software front were good as well with Nintendo having six of the top ten selling games in December according to Yahoo.com.  Modern Warfare 2 continued to sell successfully in December after setting the record for largest entertainment release ever in November.

“The recession has not altered the amount of video games I buy,” senior Andy Meis said.  “Video games are my most important purchase.”

Although the video game industry had a good year sales were still down from 2008.  However, 2009 was still the second-best year for the video game industry after 2008.
