Boys swimming team finishes third at state

With a first-place finish in diving for his first state championship in four tries, senior Trevor Sisson led the MG boys swimming and diving team to a third-place team finish at the WIAA Division 2 state meet Friday, Feb. 19.  Sisson scored 420.05 points to help MG earn 20 individual points in the diving event.

The Silver Eagles earned 187 points behind four-time state champion McFarland, which had 340.5 points and Whitefish Bay, which had 238.

MG’s 20o-yard freestyle team of  sophomore Jack Allen,  and juniors Ben Weinhaus, Jake McDade,  and Aaron Pomeroy placed second with a time of 1:29.24 behind a record-setting McFarland team. The foursome teamed up for a fourth-place finish in the 400 free relay as well.

McDade had the best finish in an individual swimming event – placing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.71. His finish gave the team 15 points. McDade also placed ninth in the 200 freestyle.

In the 50 freestyle,  Weinhaus placed fifth with a time of 22.5 and junior Pomeroy was seventh with a time of 22.72.  Pomeroy also  placed twelfth in the 100 free.

Weinhaus anchored the 200 medley team with freshman Mitchell Paull,  junior Alex Heyworth,  and Allen. The foursome placed seventh. Allen placed eleventh in the 100 butterfly.

Sisson’s brother, Patrick, placed eighth and was the top freshman performer in diving, while junior Austin Anderson finished 12th. Combined MG’s three divers scored 36 points to help MG lead the meet through three events.
