Boys hockey team hopes to improve

With three out of four of their leading scorers returning this season, big things are expected from the Monona Grove boys hockey team this year. Last season the team went 13-13 overall and made it to the second round of the playoffs, but they’re expecting more this season.

“Our goal is to win conference,” senior captain Trevor Okeson said. “After conference we’d like to get a top three seed in sectionals so we can get a first week bye in playoffs.”

Okeson, a starting forward who had 61 points last season and made all-state honorable mention, doesn’t only have high hopes for his team, but he is also setting big goals for himself this year.

“This year I’d love to get Mr. Hockey,” said Okeson. “It’s a big goal I’d like to accomplish.”

Okeson would not be the first of MG hockey players to be considered for the title as former MG player, Russell Blaser, was a finalist for the individual honors last year.

However, Okeson and his team have some work to do if they would like to accomplish their goals. Last season they had 113 goals scored on them and had an early round playoff loss.

Okeson thought improving upon the basics was the best solution.

“This year we’re going to try and focus more on our defense because last year we had many goals scored on us, Okeson said “We’re trying to eliminate as many shots as we can. Not have them score as much.”

When it comes to confidence in his team’s ability though, Okeson has plenty.

“Nobody has problems with each other and that helps us on the ice too,” Okeson said. “We all have each other’s backs.”

Okeson is also relying on some of his fellow seniors to step up and help him lead the team this year.

“I’m looking forward to either Cole Schuchardt or Brett Daggett helping lead because they haven’t been the people to go to before, but this is their senior year and I think they’re both expecting big things from each other,” Okeson said.

The team is in no short supply of talent with seven seniors returning this season, three of which were top scorers last season including Connor Johnston (66), Okeson (61), and Dylan Zink (46).
