Boys swim team eyes return trip to state meet

The Monona Grove boys swim team has a fantastic chance of continuing upon the great season they had last year this season.

Last season the MG boys swim team finished third at state and broke five school records.

“Last season went great,” senior captain Aaron Pomeroy, who was a member of the school record-breaking 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay team, said. “It was our highest finish at state we’ve ever had.”

With such an impressive season last year, it seems impossible that the team could repeat the performance. However, the team returns all of their state swimmers including Pomeroy, senior Jacob McDade, Alexander Heyworth, Tyler Roehr, junior Jackson Allen, Ben Weinhaus, sophomore Mitchell Paul, and Austin Anderson except for state-winning diver, Trevor Sisson, who graduated last year. Also, the team isn’t looking to just repeat their performance, but they would like to improve upon it.

“We have high hopes,” Pomeroy said. “We’re definitely looking to win conference. Probably take second at state. That’s kind of our goals as of right now. They look pretty attainable.”

To attain this though, they have a few key details they’re looking to improve upon.

“Just across the board everybody wants to swim faster,” said Pomeroy. “Just drop our times and get higher places. Win some invites.”

Pomeroy isn’t only thinking of ways his team can improve, he is also looking at the improvements he would like to make himself.

“I just want to improve on my season last year,” Pomeroy said. “I injured my shoulder and that knocked me on my back so, I want to have a better year this year.”

Healthy and ready to go, Pomeroy is just ready for the season to begin and has big goals for himself this year.

“I would just like to have higher placing,” said Pomeroy. “I definitely want to win in a couple of relay and just have fun.”

With so much talent on the team, good things are definitely in store for the MG boys swim team this season.

The Herald-Independent reported the first MG boys swimming and diving meet of the season, a first-place finish at the Sun Prairie Invitational.
