Girls basketball team looks to rise in the rankings

With only two returning juniors and four returning sophomores, the Monona Grove girls’ varsity basketball team will need to improve their game to move up in the Badger South Conference standings this upcoming season.

Last season the team had their first WIAA tournament win since 2002-2003.  The Silver Eagles beat the McFarland Spartans with two more wins than the Eagles; which was a great accomplishment for the Silver Eagles.

The Silver Eagles’ record last season was 11 wins and 14 losses and they ended up fourth in conference.

“They were always really close games,” junior player Ashley Werner said. “We were always ahead at one point in the game.”

The team is predicted to move up to third in the conference this season with Edgewood and Fort Atkinson being their toughest competition. With no senior players and a team mostly made up of underclassmen, the juniors will really have to step up, according to Werner.

“I think we will be conference champs,” sophomore player Taylor Nelson said. “The battle will really be between us and Fort.”
