Three unanswered TDs give MG WIAA Division 3 football title

MADISON — The Monona Grove football team scored three touchdowns in the second half of the WIAA Division 3 state title game against Greendale to win the state championship.
The Silver Eagles’ defense held the Panthers to 17 points in the first half — the lowest they’ve scored all season. In the second half, MG’s offense got going late in the third quarter as wide receiver Jackson Riley caught a 46-yard pass from Tyler Blang. The Silver Eagles’ defense stopped Greendale’s drive when Steven Martine intercepted quarterback Josh Ringelberg’s pass. MG scored again when Trey Powers caught Blang’s 34-yard pass making it 17-14. The Silver Eagles recovered a Panthers’ fumble at the 39-yard line, and then sophomore Toren Young led MG down to the 1-yard line. Senior Brock Offerdahl scored the go-ahead touchdown with 53 seconds left.
MG’s defense held Greendale out of the end zone and in the final seconds of the game, sacked the quarterback twice to seal the state championship.
